The simple liar without bivalence?

چکیده
1. Background The Simple Liar is a sentence that says of itself only that it is false. The Strengthened Liar is a sentence that says of itself only that it is not true. How does the Strengthened Liar differ from its (allegedly) weaker brother, namely, the Simple Liar? According to standard thinking the Simple Liar, unlike the Strengthened Liar, yields inconsistency only if the following principles are assumed: Bivalence: Every sentence is either true or false. Non-Contradiction (LNC): No sentence is both true and false. From the so-called truth principle, namely, Truth Principle (T): A sentence is true iff what it says is the case one confronts inconsistency if, in addition to the existence of the Simple Liar, both (LNC) and Bivalence are assumed. Let s be the Simple Liar. Given

These projects reflect the core appearances that give rise to the Liar paradox (and its ilk). Semantic paradoxes arise, at least in part, from the appearance that we can ‘exhaustively characterize’ all sentences of our language in terms of ‘semantically significant’ predicates, and truly do as much in our language. Consider the classical picture according to which our semantically significant p...
متن کاملAre Tableaux an Improvement on Truth-Tables? Cut-Free proofs and Bivalence
We show that Smullyan's analytic tableaux cannot p-simulate the truth-tables. We identify the cause of this computational breakdown and relate it to an underlying semantic diiculty which is common to the whole tradition originating in Gentzen's sequent calculus, namely the dissonance between cut-free proofs and the Principle of Bivalence. Finally we discuss some ways in which this principle can...
متن کاملThe principle of bivalence
0. Introduction The relations between the principles of bivalence, excluded middle and non contradiction are not necessarily clear. One reason is that there are various formulations of these principles, not always equivalent. In this paper, we try to formulate precisely these principles in order to discuss their relationships and to answer the question: is the conjunction of the principles of e...
متن کاملThe dual implication of dual affordance: stimulus-task binding and attentional focus changing during task preparation.
In task switching experiments, comparing performance with bivalent stimuli (affording both tasks) to univalent stimuli (affording one task) confounds the need to change focus between dimensions and stimulus-task binding, because bivalent stimuli require focusing (and refocusing) but also appeared in the competing task before. To separate these influences, participants switched between vertical ...
متن کاملPresentism and Fatalism
It is widely believed that presentism is compatible with both a libertarian view of human freedom and an unrestricted principle of bivalence. I argue that, in fact, presentists must choose between bivalence and libertarianism: if presentism is true, then either the future is open or no one is free in the way that libertarians understand freedom. Presentism is the view that it always has been an...
